Katalin Pitti
She was first educated singing at the Béla Bartók Vocational Secondary School for Music, her tutors being Olga Sík and Melitta Bán. Following this, she attended the Opera Faculty at the University of Ferenc Liszt, where she graduated with eminent grades in the university year of 1977-78. Amongst her excellent tutors there were: dr. Jenő Sípos, Miklós Lukács, András Mikó, István Egri, József Patkó, Emmi Varasdy, Ádám Medveczky, Miklós Forrai, András Pernye.
During her university years she participated in the Bach Competition in Leipzig, 1976, in which competition she came second.
In the 1978-79- season she became member of the Hungarian State Opera House. The Othello titled television film was produced in the year of her graduation, in which Katalin Pitti was chosen for the role of Desdemona .This special opportunity enabled her, as a fresh graduate, to sing with the greatest ones of the opera singers; József Simándy and György Melis, with János Ferencsik as the conductor. The film brought her national fame and professional success.
As a private singer to the Hungarian State Opera House she has been able to sing the most wonderful roles of the opera literature. She has collaborated with a range of excellent conductors; from Ervin Lukács to Patane Giuseppe, from ifj. Imre Palló to Gardelli Lamberto, from Miklós Erdélyi to János Kovács, which experiences has taught her a lot. Naturally, her collaborations with the directors has also polished her various roles.
She has been performing in various countries in the world, for example in Verdi’s Lombardos, in Dresden. . She has appeared in the title role of Traviata not only in Budapest but also in Sofia, Cluj, Kosice, Tokyo, Osaka. She has been performing the role of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly in Praque and back home for over 16 years. She sang Mimi in la Boheme in Bratislava, Tatiana in Tchaikovsky’s Anegin in Praque, in Moscow, in Hamburg and in Rio de Janerio.
Apart from her opera roles, she has enjoyed singing oratorio pieces by Bach, Mozart, Liszt, Kodály; she has given numerous singing evenings at the Hungarian Radio or at the Academy for Music, where, most recently, she has performed songs by Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti and Tosti conducted by János Ács.
She has been invited to interpret roles also in the world of operetta. Most frequently, she has been singing in the title role of Lehar’s Merry Widow on different stages, ranging from the Margaret Island Open Air Theatre to the Staatsoper in Vienna, but with which role she has travelled as far as Tokyo. She has appeared in the role of Saffi in the Gypsy Baron, in Lisa’s in the Country of Smiles; she has performed the role of Sylvia in the Tchardash Queen as well as the role of Countess Maritsa. Whereas, Viktor Jacoby’s Sybill was made into a Tv- play.
She has been teaching for the past ten years, for the past two years at the Buda House of Artist foundation school. She teaches a course for vocal formations at the Music Department of the West-Hungarian University, with teaching as a constant source of interesting findings and special delight for her.
